Mr. Lampe,

The DIC was familiar with the information on the Corvette and you can see his comments below.

Unfortunately it will likely require the time and involvement of a civil attorney to help resolve this.

The criminal side of the issue was the original theft of the vehicle.  Now it’s more on the civil side because of the time elapsed and number of hands that have touched the vehicle since it was reported stolen.

With the documentation you’ve maintained it should help bolster your position, but you’ll likely still have to employ an attorney to protect your interests.  With what you’ve presented you’re as much a victim as the person who bought the vehicle from you.  You may have to consider civil action against the person and dealership that originally handled sales of the vehicle prior to your purchase of the car.

I was hopeful the case report would have supplemental information to provide a clearer picture about what happened when the vehicle was recovered.

I know this isn’t what you were hoping to here, but barring any other developments in F/Sgt. Hearon’s research there isn’t anything else we (ISP) can offer from the criminal side of this case.

Feel free to call me if you have any questions.

Dave, I received a call from a detective in Florida about three months ago about this case. The car in question was stolen from Hobbs nursery and I could not find any information in the file that it had been recovered. I found the original victim (who is still living) and gave the Florida detectives his information. I will try to find the contact information for the detective and see what he found. I believe an attorney could clear this up. If Lampe purchased the vehicle at fair market value and on good faith the courts should rule in his favor (that is what Indiana court typically do). I will let you know. Thanks Jeff

Jeff – I’ll try to make this clear as mud……..

The person who sent this email to me is Richard Lampe.  He was referred to me by another car collector – a personal friend of mine.  After a brief phone conversation I asked him to reduce everything to an email – as attached.

Here’s the short story – Lampe sold a salvaged 1969/1972 corvette via eBay to a buyer in Florida.  The Florida buyer was doing restoration work and found another VIN and contacted local Florida police who ran the VIN and got a stolen hit and confiscated the vehicle.  The buyer is now making a claim against Lampe – and Lampe fears he’ll be arrested for having possession of a stolen vehicle that he had no idea was stolen.

Now, to why I’m referring this to you – the original stolen report appears to be a Putnamville Case, 53-2022, date of theft: 1/22/1983.

Lampe suspects the vehicle was recovered then salvaged and for whatever reason never removed from NCIC.  Providing more intrique, Lampe bought the car from a Clay County, IN deputy Sheriff who had purchased the car years earlier at a car lot – sometime after the original stolen report.

Lampe wants to know if the original case was ever supped out and if there is any information available that will help clear his name and potential financial liability.

Any suggestions of how to try and get to the bottom of this?

Hello Sgt. Bursten,

I really appreciate you taking time to help me with this mess.  Attached is a the story and the links posted are ok to click on and will show you the items that will help you if any contacts need to be made to people.  The purchaser wrote this letter and it explains what he has been through so far and I attached an invoice of what he has put into the vehicle now in Florida.  Please let me know if this is enough detail.

I am very worried about this and I feel the insurance company simply recovered the vehicle paid the claim and sold it especially since a dealer sold it and then a bank, it just makes no sense .
